Laduma Ngxokolo
Born in Port Elizabeth in 1986 Laduma Ngxokolo had his first hands-on experience of textile designing in 2003 when he studied at Lawson Brown High School, in Port Elizabeth. Ngxokolo’s love for knitwear design started with assisting his late mother Lindelwa Ngxokolo machine-knitting garments for sale. His flair for knitwear design earned him a bursary from both Port Elizabeth based Cape Wools South Africa and Mohair South Africa during his Btech studies at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in 2010. The same year Laduma won the South African national leg of the South African Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) Design Competition which earned him a trip to London where he had to compete with eight international finalists and again won the category which earned the Bell Veronica Trophy and a £1000. The title of his competition entry was “The Colourful World of the Xhosa Culture” that consisted of men’s knitwear which has patterns that are inspired by traditional Xhosa beadwork. Soon as Ngxokolo completed his BTech studies at NMMU in 2010 he was invited amongst six international post graduates who were invited to speak about their innovative projects at the 2011 Design Indaba Conference in Pecha Kucha format. Laduma’s work has attracted museums like such as the Iziko South African National Gallery to exhibit and publish his work in books. Laduma works is also set to be feature in an international knitwear book that showcases latest trends in the knitwear industry.
Best Hat
Kerry and Dominik from The Little Hattery
The Little Hattery started on a little trestle table in Tamboerskloof, Cape Town just over a year ago. Inspired by beauty and driven by a perfectionist streak, the creative energy is such that "we need a thousand people on staff for all of the ideas". For Director and Head designer Kerry Hillier, this is far from her first artistic endeavour, however it is her first business. She is intent that her company be a truly modern organisation. In this sense, not only is it technologically sophisticated, but also ecologically astute and culturally integrated. Exuberant responses to their work from the outset has seen success in their Wedding, Daywear, Event, Corporate, and Avante Garde ranges. Thrilled to be chosen to judge the 2012 best dressed at L'Ormarins Queen's Plate, they look forward to enjoying an exuberant display of style that will surely underline the fact that South African millinery is indeed in rude form.
Sam Walker aka La Muse
Samantha is a buyer for Re Jeans at Woolworths, following her success at JT1 lingerie (also Woolworths). Her fashion blog, PopYaCollar, is a fashionista's view of the streets of Cape Town and beyond. La Muse is part of the city's fashion industry and has made it her business to seek out the sartorial choices she believes are nothing short of fabulous. As yesteryear's fashions are reincarnated as tomorrow's trends, the watchful eye of PopYaCollar's pocket camera doesn't miss a click, and the term 'fashion victim' takes on new meaning.
